'Wastefield' hole occupied in Bradford

Concerned residents of Bradford have started an occupation of the Westfield Hole in Bradford city centre this afternoon. It seems that a number of residents have decided to say enough is enough. Occupy Westfield are, we understand, determined to occupy the Westfield hole until Westfield go ahead with the centre they promised to build more than eight years ago, or the council takes the site back and does something constructive with it.

George Galloway was alerted to the occupation during the John Carlos meeting in Bradford and then went to the site to visit the Occupation and to hear the demands in person.

Race to the line

With John Carlos, one of the Mexico ‘68 podium protesters, on a speaking tour of Britain, author of a forthcoming book on the Olympics MARK PERRYMAN describes the continuing clash of race and the Games

United on the Mexico podium by their fierce opposition to racism Tommie Smith, Peter Norman and John Carlos used the medal ceremony for what has become an iconic moment of public protest. Its durability as an image of anti-racism in sport and beyond is testament to the global platform the Olympics provided. Even before satellite TV and digital media, the dignified audacity of the three medal-winners became an overnight world-wide news story.

1968 Olympics protestor John Carlos on tour in the UK

John Carlos and Tommie Smith’s defiant black-gloved salute on the 1968 Olympics winner’s podium brought worldwide attention to racial segregation and inequality in the USA.

Their show of defiance remains one of the most iconic images of the 20th Century. In Conversation with John Carlos will be a unique opportunity for people across the UK to discover the reasons behind his decision to raise his clenched gloved fist, and to learn how his gesture of defiance radically altered the course of his life.

Film maker Ken Loach backs Respect's Paulette North for Bristol Mayor

Internationally renowned local filmmaker Ken Loach has given his full backing to Paulette North the Respect Party's candidate for the forthcoming Bristol mayoral election.

Ken Loach whose latest film is up for yet another prestigious award and whose other films include Kes, Looking for Eric and The Wind that Shakes the Barley, had this to say about why he backs Paulette North, "I am pleased to support

Paulette. She would work for the ordinary people of Bristol. She would defend them against the vested interests of big business and central government. She would be the 'people's Mayor'!"

Paulette North said of the support of Mr Loach. " I am delighted that someone whose films are so inspirational, speaks so highly of me. But most of all it's an endorsement of the values and principles we both share".

Paulette North has made it clear about what she believes would make Bristol a better and fairer City, preferring straight talking to the usual bland vagueness of other politicians.

She has stated: "It is a disgrace that Bristol can be both so prosperous yet have some of the most deprived areas in the country.

Respect and Labour debate - What happened in Bradford?

Respect National Secretary Clive Searle discusses with Lucy Powell, Labour's candidate for the Manchester Central by-election, on 'What Happened in Bradford - Lessons for trade unionists' at a meeting organised by Manchester TUC. Watch both opening speeches here.

Who gets to see the Torch? Who gets to see the Games?

As the Olympic Torch relay starts its route around Britain author of a forthcoming book on the Olympics Mark Perryman questions the claim of a Games for all

Beginning its long route around Britain the Torch Relay is one of the few examples of decentralisation and free-to-watch events that could have transformed the 2012 Olympics into a Games for all.

There is little doubt that the sight of the Olympic torch as it passes through a village, town or city up and down the byways, with photo-opps at famous landmarks will ignite popular interest and huge media coverage.

George Galloway: I'm as Scottish as they are . . and I'm having my say.

In an interview published in the Sunday Mail yesterday I argued the case against the partition of this small island of English speakers (apart from the Punjabi part in Pollokshields). Predictably the piece brought forward a rush of abuse from the anonymous internet bravehearts who lurk in the undergrowth waiting for apostates from the white heather club school of political science to stone. In fact not a few of them (even on a Sunday morning) had clearly started on the cream sherry. Many departed from the premise that anyone who could be elected to the House of Commons six times in four constituencies in two countries and be, well, quite prominent in politics actually was clearly an idiot and merely to say so in language as colourful as the tartan was sufficient to defeat their views. You can be the judge of that dear readers. These critics didn't bother me, I've faced worse.

Political lessons from Bradford's 'second spring'

Recommended article: The defeat of Labour leader Ian Greenwood in the Bradford council local elections and his deputy leader Imran Hussain in the Bradford West by-election – both by Respect party candidates – ushers in the chance of new political possibilities in the city. Ratna Lachman writes in The Guardian

We cannot yet be sure whether Bradford is setting a new political template nationally by breaking the stranglehold of the three-party politics bunched up to the centre-right of the political spectrum, or whether the Respect victories at the by-election and council polls are just a local and temporary phenomenon.

What is certain is that the Respect party's succession of victories has shaken up the political establishment and highlighted the need for local leaders to wake from political stupor and stand up as champions for a city that appears to be in terminal economic decline.

Leading Tory joins Respect in Bradford

George Galloway this morning welcomed the latest recruit to Respect, Qurban Malik. Mr Malik has been an active Conservative for many years and was deputy chairman of the Bradford Conservative Party. He stood for the Tories in Manningham ward in the recent local elections.

"The old parties have failed Bradford," said Mr Malik. "Respect has shown it has huge support in Bradford city from an electorate desperate for change and desperate for a positive vision for Bradford's future."

George Galloway welcomed Mr Malik to the Respect Party just before the party's national council meeting, held in Bradford for the first time. "We are attracting support from all of the major parties and from that majority in the country which is increasingly saying none of the above. Mr Malik gave me invaluable personal support in the by-election. I am delighted that a man of very considerable standing has now decided to do everything can to build the Respect Party here in Bradford."

Strategy Motion for Respect Party Conference 2012

1. George Galloway’s remarkable victory in Bradford West, swiftly followed by that of our five new councillors, arose from the determination of the people of Bradford West to cast out the complacent and incompetent political elite that have dragged their city down. Inspired by the Respect campaign, thousands voted to reject the politics of austerity and economic decline. Bradford has shown the way, and the Respect Party will do everything we can to help and support the new generation of activists who are leading the fight for an alternative.

European elections: if the left doesn't lead revolt against austerity, others will

Recommended article: The French and Greek elections have already shifted Europe's politics. But it needs real change to hold the right at bay, write Seamus Milne in The Guardian

Revolt against austerity is sweeping Europe. The election of François Hollande has not only opened up the chance of a change of direction in France, but even in the citadels of fiscal orthodoxy in Brussels, Frankfurt and Berlin. In Greece, Sunday's electoral earthquake has all but destroyed the political establishment that dominated the country for 40 years.

From the Netherlands to Romania, governments are falling under the weight of cuts and tax rises required by the eurozone's new permanent deflation treaty. In Ireland, the anti-austerity tide is swelling support for a no vote in this month's treaty referendum.

HOLLANDE’S VICTORY HERALDS EUROPEAN FIGHT BACK AGAINST AUSTERITY

Recommended article: John Wight writes for Socialist Unity about the French Presidential elections and the movement against austerity across Europe.

Francois Hollande’s victory in the French presidential elections constitutes a major step forward in the struggle against austerity across Europe. Its immediate effect is the smashing of the pro-austerity consensus of the political classes, responsible for strangling the life out of Europe’s economies over the past four years and resulting in a deepening social crisis which for increasing numbers of people caught at the sharp end looked to have no end in sight.

Finally, it is anticipated, the government of a major European economy will break with the markets and the banks to establish an economic policy configured around the needs of the majority of its people. This in itself will constitute a significant political departure from the steady rightward shift that has taken place throughout Europe in response to the global economic crisis.

Bradford elections on the Real Deal

Saturday, 5 May 2012

Andrew Burgin: 2012 elections are results to build on

Britain’s swing to Labour mirrors electoral results across Europe as people seek to oppose brutal austerity policies. In many places this is the first real opportunity for those facing such measures to make themselves heard at an electoral level. Those responsible for implementing these policies have been punished.

In France, the presidential election looks set to be won by the Socialist party candidate Francois Hollande. He is campaigning on a programme opposing the austerity policies of the right under Sarkozy, and for creating jobs and growth through investment with some limited proposals to tax the rich. He has been pushed to the left by the vibrant campaign of the Front de Gauche headed by Jean-Luc Melenchon and this has given him that extra sustainable edge over the incumbent.

In the Greek elections, the perpetrators of austerity will be punished – in this case the social democratic PASOK is likely to take the biggest hit – with anti-austerity parties of the far left expected to make large gains. Anger and disenchantment at the continued collapse of the economy and drive to further cut wages and increase unemployment are finding their reflection at the ballot box.
