It's Kate Hudson for Manchester Central
The Respect Party has voted to select Kate Hudson as its candidate for the Manchester Central by-election due on 15 November 2012. The party held a selection meeting on Tuesday 17 July. Kate Hudson, General Secretary of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND), is thrilled at the prospect of contesting the seat.
‘I am proud to tread the same path as those in this great city who have fought down the ages for peace and socialism. Now more than ever there is an urgent need for a genuine and viable political alternative: an alternative which will bring peace and prosperity to the people of Britain; an alternative which expresses the real values and interests of ordinary people, which breaks with the failed policies of the three main parties.
‘These are the values of Respect: against poverty, against war and nuclear weapons, against racism and imperialism, for a new society based on justice, equality and economic redistribution. A society where free education is a right, children grow up free from poverty, where health care, jobs and pensions are secure.
None of the main parties can now be counted on to defend our dignity - to govern in line with people's priorities - yet events in the real world show that we have never been in greater need of a strong voice to speak up for us. Respect is that strong voice and we will fight to serve the people of Manchester Central and we will fight to win.’
George Galloway, MP for Bradford West and the Respect Party’s Nominating Officer congratulated Kate on her selection. 'I support the nomination of Kate Hudson. She is an outstanding national figure, outranking the New Labour candidate in civil society terms, and way better in labour movement terms. I think a woman
candidate against a woman, an experienced woman against an ingenue, anti-war versus pro war, anti-Trident versus pro Trident etc...Kate Hudson is an excellent candidate.'
